What's So Horrible About A Winless Champion?
Jamie McMurray has won two of the most prestigious events in the Sprint Cup Series this season, but does that make him a better championship prospect than a winless but more consistent Jeff Gordon? Kurt Smith gives us his opinion of what is more important.

Dialing It In: The Not-So-New Labor Day Tradition

Jay Pennell · Thursday September 2, 2010

This weekend, NASCAR will celebrate the Labor Day holiday by running 43 cars under the lights at Atlanta Motor Speedway. 500 miles of racing on Labor Day weekend has always been a long-standing tradition; but for the folks in Atlanta, the hope is this new one can make up for the recent loss of a NASCAR institution: their second date. After hosting two events on the Cup Series schedule for 50 years, next season will be the first time the 1.5-mile speedway just south of downtown Atlanta will have only one event.

How NASCAR's "Mouthpieces" Miss the Point ... And They're Not The Only Ones

Voices From the Heartland
Jeff Meyer · Thursday September 2, 2010

When NASCAR released it was forming a new Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) Dept. this past Monday, I instantly added it to my list of “possible column ideas.” Unfortunately, the more I read, the more confused I became.

While I thought I got the gist of it, the release was written in such corporate gibberish that for a moment, I thought it was penned by Brian France himself.

Fanning the Flames: Cleaning Out the Inbox and Heading for Hampton

NASCAR Fan Q & A
Matt Taliaferro · Thursday September 2, 2010

Everyone says NASCAR won’t add another road race to the schedule. Fine, we get it. But if ISC owned the Montreal circuit, would there magically appear a race north of the border? And what’s your thoughts on what a Cup race would be like in Montreal? I’m all for it. Thanks Matt.
— Kelley McNally

A: You’re darn right there’d be a race in Montreal if ISC owned the circuit. I think Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villenueve is so cool because of its taxing nature to both man and machine.

Fantasy Insider: Bet High On Two Hit or Miss Drivers in Atlanta

Mike Ravesi · Thursday September 2, 2010

Welcome back, one and all, to Frontstretch.com’s Fantasy Insider. With the final off week of the season behind us, it’s time to look ahead to Sunday night’s race in Atlanta, the highlight of Labor Day weekend – and the track where they used to give out the coolest trophy in auto racing to the winner of the Bass Pro Shops 500. Too bad this Sunday it’s the Emory Healthcare 500 instead! Oh, well; maybe there’ll be a stethoscope or something on the trophy. Anyways, with the Chase around the corner now’s the perfect time to fine-tune your own fantasy roster for the homestretch. Here’s your lineup of drivers you are going to want and the one you really are going to need to avoid for this weekend’s race…

Did You Notice? ... What We Can Learn From Montreal, Sorting Out NASCAR PR, And Where's Father Time?

Thomas Bowles · Wednesday September 1, 2010

Did You Notice? … How well-received the Montreal finish was for fans, competitors, and the packed house of 70,000 in Canada? So much has been written about the race itself, but for those disillusioned with the state of NASCAR this season, it’s important to understand why things went so well:

Mechanical attrition played a factor. For all the talk about the last-lap pass between Boris Said and Max Papis, this race would have been dominated by Marcos Ambrose if not for electrical problems that ruined his day. Then, Carl Edwards held the point, holding firm up front after the final round of green-flag stops before a broken track bar ruined his chances with just six laps to go.

Road Course Ringer: Montreal Makes The Case for Twisties In The Chase

Voice of Vito
Vito Pugliese · Wednesday September 1, 2010

During the past few weeks, the NASCAR topics of conversation have centered around the Chase — who’s in, who’s not, who’s trying to make it — and the impending changes to the schedule for 2011 and beyond. One of the recurring narratives of the Chase convo has to do with the tracks involved and if a road course should be made part of the final ten playoff races – or if more road racing should be added to the schedule in general.

Well, following last weekend’s NAPA Auto Parts 200 at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, if there is to be a push for such a measure, now would be the time to get cracking on it.

Mirror Driving: Funding Gordon, Driver Vs. Team, And Park, Please Come Back!

Frontstretch Staff · Wednesday September 1, 2010

currently without a full-time sponsor for 2011. Just how troubling is that in the context of the sport as a whole? And who will end up on the side of his car next year?*

Phil: Very troubling. Gordon’s a marketable person. He should be able to get something.
Summer: Well it sounds like Wal-Mart won’t be. I don’t know, though, and I find that kind of scary. You hear people calling Gordon and Jimmie Johnson “corporate robots” all the time. You’d think someone would want him!
