Top Ten Excuses Kurt Busch Might Give For His Latest Antics

Jeff Meyer · Wednesday May 16, 2012

10. He was still upset Newt Gingrich dropped out of the Presidential race.

9. Confused Ryan Newman with that Lexus one of his Penske engineers used to drive. Just wanted to come by and say “hello.”

8. Been hanging out at Jeremy Mayfield’s place a lot lately… oh that’s right, Jeremy doesn’t have a place anymore.

Just Like His Brother: Old Kurt Busch Rears His Ugly Head at Darlington

The Yellow Stripe
Bryan Davis Keith · Tuesday May 15, 2012

Two straight years, two melees on pit road at Darlington to end the “Southern” 500, two different Busch brothers involved.

This fight from this past Saturday was different. The crews fought, not the drivers. The signature video clip of one car getting drilled was not there. Chances are, Kurt Busch vs. Ryan Newman will not be the marketing campaign used to sell tickets to the 2013 Cup race at Darlington.

Who's Hot / Who's Not in NASCAR: Darlington-Charlotte Edition

Brett Poirier · Tuesday May 15, 2012

It has been a tough season for Hendrick Motorsports. It all started in Speedweeks when Hendrick’s four drivers combined to wreck 243 cars (just an estimate) before the Daytona 500 even started. The Great American Race didn’t go much better. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished second, but Kasey Kahne and Jimmie Johnson were each involved in wrecks while Jeff Gordon blew an engine.

Three of Hendrick’s four teams started the season in a hole. Johnson dug himself out of it fast, but Victory Lane had eluded the five-time champion until Saturday night. Kasey Kahne was mired in 32nd in the standings after five races, although five straight top 10s have him back in Chase contention (Jeff Gordon is going to need some time).

Five Points to Ponder: All-Star Race Edition

Danny Peters · Tuesday May 15, 2012

After relatively lackluster trips to three of the best tracks in the sport – Richmond, Talladega and Darlington – in the last three weeks, the Sprint Cup circus heads back to the home base of Charlotte for a week of festivities prior to this Saturday night’s All-Star race. And that’s where I’ll start this week’s edition of Five Points to Ponder.

ONE: Next up – The All-Star Race: No Points, Just One Big Prize.

I’m not even going to attempt to understand whatever format it is this season or how the system has been gerrymandered this year to ensure Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is in the starting field, but I am excited to see some no-points racing under the lights at Charlotte Motor Speedway this Saturday night.

VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200

On Friday night, the Nationwide Series returned to action at Darlington Raceway. With Travis Pastrana coming back for his second try in the No. 99, ESPN expanded what was supposed to be a 45-minute edition of NASCAR Countdown into a full hour.

During that time, the primary feature shown was yet another piece on Pastrana. This time, the focus was on his upbringing and family in particular.

Learning New Aero Rules: Why The NASCAR All-Star Race Matters

Tech Talk
Mike Neff · Tuesday May 15, 2012

Slugger Labbe is heading to the All-Star Race for the first time with Paul Menard this weekend and he is approaching it as a learning experience. The race is completely different from the rest of the season because the segments are short and it is all about getting to the front. It is also going to be an even more exaggerated test session because of the new technical bulletin that just came out from NASCAR that is going to make a significant change to the aerodynamics of the cars.

In our weekly Tech Talk, Mike Neff sat down with Labbe to find out just what makes the All-Star Race different from a mechanical perspective.

Matt McLaughlin's Thinkin' Out Loud: Darlington Parade Recap

Matt McLaughlin · Monday May 14, 2012

Dramatic Moment – All the ingredients were there: a green-white-checkered finish at Darlington, questions about who had the gas to go the extra laps, some drivers who had gambled on fresh rubber late in the top 8, and a notoriously slick race track, but the finish was a bit of an anticlimax.

The Case Of Gordon's Voodoo Curse

Monday Morning Teardown
Ron Lemasters · Monday May 14, 2012

Hendrick Motorsports won its 200th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Saturday night when Jimmie Johnson crossed the finish line first at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The man who has won nearly half of Hendrick’s 200 series victories, Jeff Gordon, finished 35th in the same race.

200 Wins, A King And A Corporation: NASCAR Then And Now

Bowles-Eye View
Thomas Bowles · Monday May 14, 2012

Saturday night at Darlington was defined by history, a milestone 200th victory for NASCAR’s most successful modern-era car owner, Rick Hendrick. It was a long time coming, a sixteen-race drought in contrast with the New York Yankees-like efficiency of the organization: five straight championships, from 2006-10 and employer of the sport’s two winningest active drivers. But as the lights dimmed, The Lady In Black fading into the night last Saturday, “the chase” over for a business pursuing a historic number one couldn’t help but remember the date that truly defined it: 27 years, ten months, and eight days since 200 was actually made to mean something within the walls of NASCAR competition.
